Changes to Dashboard Refreshes

We're changing how we refresh dashboards to deliver better user experience and ensure the sustainability of our platform. Here's what you need to know.

Greetings, wizards! We have some important updates for you about how we keep dashboards data up-to-date.

Historically, we’ve refreshed dashboards whenever their data is older than 6 hours on Dune and 24 hours on Spark. This feature, known as Time To Live (TTL), has served us well.

In Our commitment to making data as accessible and useful as possible, we’vetaken on the expense of refreshing a vast array of dashboards – some of which, unfortunately, do not generate broad value for our community.

Our vibrant community of wizards has put a lot of time and effort into creating these dashboards, which serve as public goods We believe it is our responsibility to keep these public goods useful; The associated costs we’ve incurred to maintain the hundreds of thousands of dashboards on Dune, we’ve happily borne as an act of goodwill towards our dedicated Dune community. However, indiscriminately refreshing all dashboards, regardless of their community value, is not sustainable.

Over the past months, we've implemented changes to enhance the transparency of data freshness of Dune dashboards, and provided wizards with more tools to manage their data freshness to best suit their needs. This has included introducing a clearer indication of a dashboard's data age, adding a Run button to dashboards, and recently launching Dashboard Scheduling. Furthermore, we've initiated charging credits when users apply parameters to a dashboard, to prevent subsidizing dashboard runs that don't offer broad value to our community.

Next week, on Monday, July 24th, we will be turning off auto-refresh (TTL) for all content on Dune. We will no longer indiscriminately refresh all dashboards.

While we’re turning off TTL, we will simultaneously roll out a new functionality to dynamically refresh our most popular dashboards. When you visit dune.com, our most accessed content will still be up-to-date.

The frequency of refreshing will vary, with more popular dashboards refreshed more often, while less popular ones will be updated less frequently. As a result, highly popular dashboards will often be refreshed more regularly than they are now, allowing us to deliver an improved user experience while keeping the costs of maintaining up-to-date public goods dashboards at a reasonable level.

We appreciate your understanding as we make these changes to ensure the sustainability of our platform and the quality of the data you depend on. As always, we're committed to delivering the best possible experience to our Dune community.
